Religious Leaders on Social Media

In case you didn’t know, his holiness AKA Pope Francis is on Instagram! I never really thought of religious leaders using social media, I don’t know I can’t picture his taking selfies. Religious leaders have been using social networks to stay connected with their followers and spread the word of whomever they worship.

Pope Francis has 6.25 million followers on Twitter. He has tweeted 580 tweets and is following 8 people. Among his posts are verses from the bible as well as him preaching the work of God. Pope Francis is seen to be the most likable pope from people of many races, ethnicity and even religion so it doesn’t surprise me to see him have this many followers.

Herb Scribner, a writer for Deseret News Nations write an article on how different media are changing religion. Scribner quotes Pauline Hope Cheong, a researcher on this topic saying, “By posting spiritual thoughts instead of just scripture, pastors make themselves a part of the conversation and not just a leader.”

I belive Pope Francis has done a good job exemplifying Cheong’s quote. For instance, Pope Francis tweeted, ” There is not sin God cannot pardon. All we need to do is asked for forgiveness.”

I do understand to need for religious leaders using social media. It helps personify a person we don’t normal get to know on a day-to-day basis. This can influence the liking and following of the religion they represent which overall helps their reputation.
